The Minister of the Interior of Benin, Hassan Seydou, in a video posted on Facebook, announced that the coup that occurred in the country on Sunday was «thwarted». He clarified that «in the early hours of Sunday morning, December 7, 2025, a small group of soldiers launched a rebellion with the aim of destabilizing the state and its institutions». The minister added that «in the face of this situation, the armed forces of Benin and their leadership remained faithful to their oath and committed to defending the Republic». Earlier, military personnel in Benin had announced the «dismissal» of President Patrice Talon through state television, however, the authorities confirmed that he is safe and that the army has regained control of the situation. The military, identifying themselves as the «Military Committee for the Restoration of the Republic», stated that their group «met on Sunday, December 7, 2025, deliberated, and decided to dismiss Patrice Talon from his duties as President of the Republic». Meanwhile, a source close to Talon said: «It's a small group that only controls the television».
